Like many of you, I am just back from a very exciting and informative conference in Los Angeles, California. For those of you who could not make it, we hope to see you next year in Milwaukee. I certainly cannot let the opportunity pass to once again thank Chief Michael Bowman, Deputy Chief Jeff Crawford, Officer James Ream and the entire team from the Los Angeles Unified School Police Department for their hospitality. A special note of thanks to Officer Rudy Perez for his hard work, as well. Of course the conference would not have been a success without the many great speakers, headlined by Assistant Deputy Education Secretary Kevin Jennings, Dr. Peter Langman and conference mainstays, Dennis Lewis and Gary Avery. Many sincere thanks to all our vendors and to Greg Goedeke and Raptor Technology who sponsored the conference for the third consecutive year. Motorola stepped up as the Silver Sponsor and Len Sec (IP Video), Freeman Public Affairs, and the Law Firm of Lackie, Dammeier and Mc Gill were our Bronze Sponsors. Finally, I must recognize our outgoing Executive Director Pete Pochowski. Pete and his assistant Issy, literally were on the go from sunup until nearly midnight for weeks before and of course during the conference. Pete and Issy, thank you from all of us! And welcome to new Executive Director Jim Koleas.
We have embarked on a new direction for NASSLEO Incorporated. We have changed our name to the National Association of School Safety and Law Enforcement Officials, in order to better capture the essence of our big tent. We have reorganized the executive committee into several standing committees and subcommittees in order to bring balance and accountability to the important work of NASSLEO. In addition, we have formed two ad hoc committees, all of which will help us accomplish the following goals for 2010-2011:
- Development of an opt-in list-serv system for all institutional members, which will allow for streamlined communication and idea sharing among all NASSLEO member institutions
- Writing a minimum of two grant applications for sustaining funding and special projects
- Developing a statement of core values that will support our mission to "Keep Schools Safe"
- Establishing an archive of important documents and items of historical significance
- Attendance of at least 140 at the Milwaukee conference, with a minimum of 26 sponsors/vendors
- Conducing monthly Executive Committee telephonic meetings in order to bring guidance and accountability to the accomplishment of these goals.
Additionally, we are looking forward to the designation of NASSLEO Inc. as a 501 (c) (3) organization which will improve our ability to attract funding so we may be even more effective addressing the challenges of our mission.
Finally, we are very excited about the commitment of Mr. Jennings’ (who is also the Director of the Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools) to maintaining and enhancing the long-standing partnership between NASSLEO and the U.S. Department of Education. We will keep the membership informed on these efforts as the year progresses.
New officers and directors were chosen, including Augustine Pescatore from the School District of Philadelphia as the President-Elect; LoEster Posey from Ft. Worth ISD as Vice-President (NASSLEO’s first female VP!); Larry Hill from Memphis City Schools as Treasurer and Pete Pochowski of the Wisconsin School Safety Coordinators Association as Secretary. Of course Mike Herrington will Chair the Board of Directors including Carl Barchus (Region 1) from Mt. Vernon, N.Y.; Ian Moffett (Region 2) from Miami Police Department, Larry Johnson (Region 3) from Grand Rapids Public Schools; Michael Menchaca (Region 4) from Ft. Worth ISD; Dan Clemente (Region 5) from Douglas County Colorado School District; Jeff Crawford (Region 6) from Los Angeles Unified School Police and, Minaz Jivraj (Region 7) from the Dufferin-Peel Catholic School Board in Mississauga, Canada.
Franklin Roosevelt once said, "In order to reach a port, we must sail—sail, not tie at anchor—sail, not drift." My pledge to you is to set sail for NASSLEO, not lose sight of our goals and to build on the work of those before me to move the association forward. Please accept my very best wishes to all of you for a successful, safe and productive school year.
Larry Borland,
President |
