9:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. BONUS SESSION. Special Pre-Conference Session: Table Top Exercises: Train–the-Trainer, Dennis Lewis, President of Edu-Safe.
A former school security director and nationally known school security expert, Mr. Lewis has crossed the country preparing schools for a crisis. Tabletop exercises provide the optimum learning environment, in a stress free atmosphere, for all levels of school staff to enhance problem solving skills for responding to various types of emergencies. This workshop is designed as a train-the-trainer activity and it includes a demonstration of the facilitation method suggested for use with tabletop exercises including opportunities for participants to practice the technique. This session will pay dividends for years to come.

Our most senior Board members continue their work with the most senior of the conference attendees. As they have for the past three years, NASSLEO leaders from Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and other cities large and small, steer this group through frank discussions on the challenges facing school police chiefs, security directors, principals, superintendents, board members, etc. See what others are doing across the US and Canada about their executive-level problems. Bring your issues, and address them with other executives face-to-face. Share quality time with many of our most talented, creative, and experienced leaders. This Special Sunday session was overwhelmingly requested by the chiefs who attended the 2009 Conference in New Orleans. There is no other forum with this makeup in North America.

After a decade long study into school shooters, Dr. Langman wrote this book to chronicle his findings. He has looked into the minds of those involved in mass school shootings, to include the Columbine and Virginia Tech killers. Hear Dr. Langman discuss the mental illness and defective personalities of school shooters, and what can be done to address the problem. Learn what “attack related behavior” is and how to identify it before tragedy strikes.

On November 5, 2009, Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan allegedly shot and killed 13 people and injured 30 more in the Soldier Readiness Center at Fort Hood, Texas. The Killeen Independent School District (KISD) supports 50 campuses, and 9 of them are on Fort Hood. The KISD School Safety Director, John Dye, will discuss the impact and ramifications of that day, subsequent days, and the on-going affects felt yet today. Learn how a crisis occurring near your school can impact your students, staff, and your entire school community.

3:15 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. Track A: Managing and Planning for Security and Safety Outside the Traditional Classroom Setting, Dennis Lewis, President of Edu-Safe. .
Students of all ages periodically participate in activities or events that take them out of the traditional classroom setting. These activities include lunch periods, assemblies, athletic events, and off-campus excursions that may be out of town, out of state, or out of the country. This workshop will provide attendees with common sense strategies to help minimize the risk for tragedy, while presenting the necessary knowledge to respond effectively when a crisis develops outside the classroom.
Track B: The Psychological Challenges for Youth and the Link to School Safety, Linda M. Kanan, PhD, Director of the Colorado School Safety Resource Center. .
This session will present some of the psychological and behavioral challenges for today’s youth. The presenter, a former school psychologist, will help you gain awareness and understanding of best practices in "psychological safety" and how they are linked in an essential way with providing physical safety in schools. Hear more about the understated part of school security.

NASSLEO has a vacancy for Director of Region II - the Northeast section of the United States plus other Board Officer positions. If you are from West Virginia up to Maine, and a member of the organization, you are eligible to join our board. We are looking for a few good men and women to help direct this growing International Organization of over 1,800 members in 32 U.S. States and Canada.

Each year NASSLEO awards cash scholarships to deserving high school seniors from across the United States and Canada. Also, members of the organization are recognized for their outstanding contributions to their schools, communities, or to NASSLEO. The Chairman of the Scholarship Committee and Regional Director for Canada, Mr. Minaz Jivraj, will present the scholarships. Presenting the Past-Presidents’ Award to a deserving California student is former NASSLEO Executive Director, Mr. Eugene (Red) McAllister of Homestead, Florida. Tickets for this event are $30 per person and can be purchased at the Conference Registration Desk BEFORE 10:00 A.M. Monday. Conference attendee guests and families are invited.
To conclude the President’s Reception, the winners of the 2 Gift Certificates for 4 free nights in Waikiki Hawaii will be announced. It is a privilege to lead others, and learning to lead is a life-long journey. The author of "LEADERSHIP: Texas Hold 'em Style" and "A Call to Lead" will discuss the ways in which people can become better leaders in both their careers and their lives, through a combination of perspective, reflection, and knowledge. The author's 25-year career in law enforcement is used as the foundation to help others enhance their leadership skills. This session will focus on actual skills and approaches leaders can use; all based on common sense, logic, and concern for people. This is real-life leadership experience provided by someone who has road-tested his approach within the unique field of policing. In or out of law enforcement, this former police captain turned college professor, is impressive.

As a former prosecutor, author, and long-time legal expert specializing in school security, Gary uses his entertaining and effective delivery to address some of the more challenging laws and policies affecting those responsible for school security. This session will help take the fear out of doing business each day for school administrators, law enforcement officers and school security personnel. Gary’s annual session has been the highest rated in our attendee surveys for several years and he is sure to please again.

2:30 P.M. to 3:15 P.M. Track A: The Gangs of Los Angeles. Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Dan Akemon and Gang Specialist, Los Angeles Police Officer Anthony Smith.
During this session the speakers present an overview of the existing gang problem in Los Angeles, and the measures being taken to combat this decades old problem that has involved some families for several generations. Both speakers have years of experience investigating and prosecuting some of the most dangerous gang members in California. The presenters will show that there are strategies and tactics that work in reducing the influence of gangs in America.
Track B: The Internet: The High-Tech Tool for Leaders, Raymond Foster, Los Angeles Police Lieutenant (retired).
By not fully comprehending the language and capabilities of Internet-based tools, today’s leaders may not see how their organization's website can be fully integrated into their current organizational practices or integrated into their vision of the future. This session gives leaders an entry into the language and capabilities of Internet-based tools so they can integrate their vision; converse with subordinates; and, maximize their Internet-based resources. Co-Author of “LEADERSHIP: Texas Hold ‘em Style,” this professor and radio talk show host brings a unique and interesting perspective to an issue few school leaders have fully embraced and/or have fully understood. Learn about this underutilized tool for the contemporary leader’s tool box.

8:15 A.M. to 9:00 A.M. Track A: Schools and the National Incident Management System (NIMS), Major Ian Moffett, Miami Police Department.
Learn the four phases of crisis management and what your district needs to do to become NIMS compliant. Major Moffett has presented this and similar NIMS sessions many times across the country. Highly respected by his colleagues in the school security arena, he is recognized as a growing voice for sound school security policies, practices, and laws.
Track B: Drug Cartels and American Schools, Larry Villalobos, Section Chief of Research and Analysis at the El Paso Intelligence Center (EPIC), U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency.
Recognized as an expert in his unique field, Chief Villalobos will demonstrate the influence of drug cartels in real terms. He will also address the victimization of students and the consequences to students who are regularly victimized. Learn what is happening, what to look for, and what can be done about this growing problem. This will be an eye-opening presentation on the relationship between drugs and schools in North America.

10:15 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. Track A: Threat Assessments for Schools, Barbara Colwell, Executive Director, Crisis Counseling and Intervention Services, Los Angeles.
As a member of the Los Angeles Unified School District Threat Assessment Team, Director Colwell has been responding to threatening situations in schools for many years. Of significant concern to her is that over the last two years, there has been a dramatic increase in school related threat cases involving adults. Director Colwell has been a leading force in the Threat Assessment program in LAUSD and will discuss this changing demographic, the impact on the District's resources, and of course, what all this means to the level of care for students.
Track B: How to Start a 501 (C) (3), James Ream, President, Los Angeles School Police Officer Association.
In addition to his role as the leader of the Association, Mr. Ream is the current Executive Director of two public charities: The Golden Badge Foundation and the Friends of Safe Schools. Through his work with the charities, these organizations have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash donations and hundreds of thousands of dollars in equipment donations to benefit law enforcement in its collective efforts to keep schools safe. His success has led him to believe that other organizations can generate funds to assist in accomplishing the goals of their respective causes, and he will show you how it can be done.

Chief Borland is among the most experienced school security chiefs in the United States. He is frequently called upon by the United States Department of Education Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools, to speak about the issues of school safety and security. In this session Chief Borland will look at trends in school safety and law enforcement and discuss the challenges, changes and opportunities that will face school security leaders in the coming years. Hear about the programs, technologies, and funding opportunities that are coming your way.
