Mr. Dennis Lewis, President of Edu-Safe LLC, former school security director and nationally known school security expert. Dennis shows how critical it is for schools to utilize best practices for ensuring a safe and secure learning environment. Use of best practices, some of which have little or no cost, is even more important in these times of reduced school resources. Dennis will show how to get the most of every school security dollar in your tight budget.

Mr. Jerry Sneed, Director of NOLA Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness. Mr. Sneed will show the progress made in New Orleans since Katrina, and how well the new plans worked during Gustav.

11:00 A. M. to 11:45 A.M. Plenary Session: Emergency Planning For Schools - The role of schools during disasters.
Mr. Matt Kallmyer, New Orleans Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness. See how American schools are being used for more than just education. As emergency assembly areas, family reunification centers, and emergency shelters, the school house has taken on new and challenging roles in our communities.

11:45 A.M. to 1:15P.M. President's Awards Luncheon President Michael Herrington and Mr. Greg Goedeke of Raptor Technologies.
Each year NASSLEO awards cash scholarships to deserving high school seniors from across the United Sates and Canada. Also, members of the organization are recognized for their outstanding contributions to their schools, communities, or to NASSLEO. The Chairman of the Scholarship Committee and Regional Director for Canada, Mr. Minaz Jivraj, will present the scholarships. Presenting the Past-Presidents' Award is former NASSLEO Executive Director Mr. Eugene (Red) McAllister.

1:15 P.M. to 2:30 P.M. Plenary Session: Preparing for the Crisis and the Need for Improved Communications
Mr. Tim Thomasson, Chief of Intelligence, Infrastructure, and Exercises, New Orleans Urban Area Security Region. Mr. Thomasson will present his case for the need to be prepared for a crisis, with special emphasis on intelligence sharing and training. With threats from weather to terrorism, "the need to know" for schools has never been greater.

2:30 P.M. to 2:50 P.M. Networking Break/Vendor Displays

2:50 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. Plenary Session: School Security Challenges: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow.
Peter Pochowski, Executive Director of The National Association of School Safety and Law Enforcement Officers (NASSLEO) and member of the FBI's Futures Work Group. Looking over the past five decades in the school security industry, Pete reviews the problems of yesterday and today, and he predicts some of the surprising challenges facing the school leaders and security staffs of tomorrow. You might be surprised at the issues you could be facing, regardless of the size or location of your school.

8:30 A.M. to 9:30 A.M. Plenary Session: Is there a new direction for education and school security in the United States?
Mr. William Modzeleski, Associate Assistant Deputy Secretary, United States Department of Education, Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools. Bill is a frequent guest speaker at NASSLEO conferences and he consistently tops the attendee surveys. He will address the direction in which the Obama Administration is going with a new Secretary of Education and, of course, a new President.

9:30 A.M. to 9:50 A.M. Networking Break/Vendor Displays

9:50 A.M. to 10:45 A.M. Plenary Session: The 2009 Legal Update for school security, law enforcement and administrators.
Mr. Gary Avery, JD, Legal advisor to NASSLEO and member of the Law Advisory Group. As a former prosecutor, author, and long-time legal expert specializing in school security, Gary uses his entertaining and effective delivery to address some of the more challenging laws and policies affecting those responsible for school security. This session will help take the fear out of doing business each day for school administrators, law enforcement officers and school security personnel.

11:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. Plenary Session: Creating User Friendly Emergency Plans for Schools.
Mr. Dennis Lewis, President of Edu-Safe Inc. Our pre-conference speaker, Dennis returns for another important session. Experience tells us that during an emergency the staff will experience elevated levels of stress. Dennis will explore the role of stress on the individual and discuss the strategies and techniques that can be used in writing and practicing the crisis plan.

1:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M. Breakout Session A : Gangs, and the Growing Threat to Our Schools.
Gary Killam, Deputy Chief of the Duval County School Police (Jacksonville Florida). The President of the Florida Gang Investigator's Association presents an in-depth report of the increasingly dangerous threat of gangs in our schools and the long-term affects on our students and their families. Learn how the media and pop culture feeds the momentum of this significant threat.

Breakout Session B: NIMS Overview and Certification for School Leadership (ICS-402).
The staff of the University of New Orleans Center for Society Law and Justice presents Incident Command System for Executives. This session will certify the senior school administrators, principals, superintendents, school police chiefs, security directors, school board members, etc. on crisis management. Get Certified - free - and be prepared for the next crisis that is coming your way.

Breakout Session C: The Executives Session (by invitation only).
Chief James Golden of Philadelphia and Jeff Crawford, Assistant Chief of the L. A. School Police Department, continue their work with the most senior of NASSLEO's members. As they did at last year's conference, these leaders steer this group through frank discussions on the challenges facing school police chiefs, security directors, principals, superintendents, board members, etc. See what others are doing across the US and Canada about their executive-level problems. Bring your issues, and address them with other executives face-to-face. Share quality time with many of our most talented, creative and experienced leaders.
