Nassleo's 38th Annual Conference
Colorado Springs, Colorado
2007
NASSLEO'S 38th Annual Conference in Colorado Springs was a huge success, according to the survey of the attendees. In addition to the positive comments received, several good suggestions were made regarding ways to improve future conferences. These comments will be passed along to the 2008 conference planners. We welcome your suggestions to improve YOUR conference so please feel free to send them to the executive director at any time.
During the 2007 conference, we were pleased to have several nationally recognized speakers representing a broad spectrum of backgrounds. The Keynote Speaker was Mr. J. Robert Flores, the Administrator of the Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention in Washington D.C. Mr. Flores thanked the safety personnel/police officers for their dedication to keeping our schools safe so children can learn.
Another important speaker was Mr. Bill Modzeleski, of the U.S. Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools. Bill is a highly respected innovative federal leader who was rated our #1 most popular speaker, once again.
Dr. Ron Stephens of the National School Safety Center was another favorite with his tips on avoiding litigation in school violence issues. Ron is a long-time friend of NASSLEO and we hope to see him more in the future.
A new speaker for NASSLEO this year was Mr. Bill Bond, a dynamic former principal who reviewed his experience with a fatal school shooting. Bill provoked a few in the audience but he passionately generated a lot of thought on the ways we protect our students.
NASSLEO'S own legal advisor Gary Avery, makes the complicated legal system easy to understand with his renowned sense of humor. He did it again, to the obvious pleasure of his audience. As the conference closer, he kept the faithful busy with the most interactive session of the conference. He is a great combination of wisdom, wit, and entertainer.
Dennis Lewis of Edu-Safe Inc. has been a presenter for many years with NASSLEO and he conducted hands-on table top exercises with real life scenarios. Dennis brings his years of experience as a school security director to his sessions, and once again, he was well received.
The conference Coordinator, Larry Borland, was active in many ways. As the organizer of the conference, he set the bar high for all speakers. He then presented in three sessions, and met his own self-imposed high standards. The conference was a family affair for Larry as his wife Barb staffed a booth for her employer, the University of Colorado at Pueblo, and she ran the Hospitality Suite for our members. And what a job she did! Our thanks go to Barb and Larry for their hard work on all fronts. They were the perfect host and hostess.
Several other presenters who contributed include Lane Lyon of KMGH TV, Peter Pochowski of Milwaukee Public Schools, Don Quick of the 17th Judicial District of Colorado, Ed Ray of Denver Public Schools, Sara Strizzi of the US Dept. of Education, Patrick Sullivan of the Cherry Creek School District, James Walpole of the Platte Canyon Schools District, Fred Wegener of the Park County Sheriff's Department, and Whei Wong of the Douglas County School District. Hector Garcia of the Clark County School District, and Gerald Darling of the Miami-Dade School Police did a great job of steering our first "executive's session." This was an opportunity for the leaders of organizations to openly discuss issues they confront all across the U.S. and Canada.
Finally, we want to thank the following Colorado folks for their assistance in the execution of the conference: Jill Dutton, Dan Clemente, Carol Rosenoff, Zach Nannestad, Loree Klinger, Dave Martin, and Ed Ray.
President Larry Hill and the Board of Directors would like to extend their appreciation to our conference sponsors: Patrick Hobby and his company, SchoolSAFECommunications, the Gold Sponsor; Bruce Winner and Sonitrol, the Silver Sponsor, and; GE Security, the Bronze Sponsor.
